Micronized Porous Silica Gel

The material structure of microporous silica gel has ideal ink absorption properties. Unlike most conventional pigments in the paper industry, porous silica gel particles have a sponge-like rigid material structure.

The internal pores offer additional void volume for liquid absorption into the bulk.

The large surface area provides perfect conditions for bright, saturated colors and wide color gamut. The low refractive index of the silica material allows dye molecules in lower layers of the coating to contribute to color density.

Typical applications are:

SYLOID® C 800-Xerogels with a pore volume of 2.0 cm³/g have the highest absorption capacity of all silica grades. This is followed by SYLOID® ED-grades with a slightly lower pore volume of 1.8 cm³/g. These grades work best in coating formulations with high binder/pigment ratios.

SYLOJET® P600- and SYLOID® silicas with a pore volume of 1.2 cm³/g are designed to work with lower binder / pigment ratios and achieve higher solid levels in liquid dispersions.

Micronised Porous Silica Hydrogels can also be used. Our SYLOID® W silica hydrogel grades are unique in their low dusting tendency and allow rapid incorporation into aqueous formulations.
