SYLOBLOC® Silicas
as Specialty Plastic Additives
SYLOBLOC® silicas can also be used as specialty additives for:
|
Plate Out Protection
When components of PVC formulations accumulate on calendar rolls and extruder screws, two problems occur - undesirable surface effects start to occur, and additional cleaning costs are incurred when switching between colored formulations.
The chief cause of the plate out problem is incompatibility between various additives and raw materials. But SYLOBLOC® silica prevents the plate out phenomena because it acts as a liquid adsorbent and pigment dispersion aid.
The simple addition of SYLOBLOC® silica results in a product of uniform quality with homogeneous surfaces of consistent color.

Pigment Dispersion
During storage, transportation, and handling, the fine particles of pigments tend to form agglomerates.
These are often difficult to disperse, leading to the non-homogeneous distribution of color in plastics.
The addition of SYLOBLOC® silica provides:
- Homogeneous distribution of pigments in plastics
- Uniform coloration of plastics
- Surfaces free from color specks
Plastic powder and powder blends form clumps, especially if the materials are hygroscopic. The fine inert qualities of the SYLOBLOC® silicas prevent clumps by surrounding the particles and separating them from each other. The result is a free-flowing powder that is easy to dispense.

Mold Release
Injection molded parts produced by deep-drawing techniques are often difficult to separate after packing.
Items such as beakers, boxes, cups and glasses stick together. A small amount of SYLOBLOC® silica is all that’s required to produce a micro-rough surface that reduces the contact surface.
Plastic parts are easier to remove, shortening further processing time.

Carrier for Liquids
As a result of its superior adsorption properties, SYLOBLOC® silica acts as a carrier for high grade liquids added to plastic powders in very small quantities. The liquids are adsorbed by SYLOBLOC® silica and turned into powders, making them much easier to work with and dispense.
